Some years ago we went to England to a small south-east town named Wellington. I was a top leader. The top of mine comprised the pupils all over Kazakhstan. For me everything was for the first time: another country, another people, another surroundings and, of course, another language.
We landed Bristol city. In an hour our group arrived at Wellington school.
Mr Etherton, a head of summer school, met us and introduced us with their instructions.
My group and I spent a month there.
It was interesting to participate in the lessons, o discuss books at Extensive Reading Library, to take part in drama, to visit different cities, to go shopping.
Our starting excursion was devoted to the safari-park- Longleat . In spite of the rain, like cats and dogs, we were much impressed to watch wild animals, walking free on their own territory. At a distance in some meters we could see lions, buffalos, elephants, giraffes, rhinos, camels. Pride of lions took my fancy.
Every Thursday from early morning to evening the whole summer school was ready to get impressions from visiting British cities. They were Bristol, Oxford, Bath.
On the eve of our departure the school organized a trip to London. There days in the capital of Great Britain were unforgettable. Such sightseeings as the Tower of London, Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace were a part of our tour through the Thames.
London is 1971 years old and it is famous for its old architecture. A great number of ancient buildings, chapels, churches were seen through the windows of black cabs (London taxis).
London is overcrowded. The representatives of different nations and nationalities are proud to be inhabitants of the well — known British capital.
Our accommodation for 3 days was London’s School of Economics with its great hostel. The hostel’s rooms were like high-class hotel’s ones.
On the bank of the Thames we saw great Shakespeare’s Theatre.
Being pressed of time, we couldn’t come in. Last day we went shopping to Oxford Street.
The whole month pupils spoke English. They had good opportunities to master the English language, because English was spoken everywhere we were. The pupils’ level of English became much better. Except lessons, the Etherton education staff paid much attention to sport and out-of-door activities.
When lessons finished, the students were involved in theatre performances or club activities. Whatever the organizers did, they were doing for the benefit of newcomers in order to brush up English.
Our group’s main aim was to improve knowledge of the English language, that was why I’d like to say if you have an opportunity to learn English abroad, why not to take it.
Both processes, either learning English, or travelling, were well done.
