The Grand Canyon

The 12^th of June, 1892. «It is very hot here! Seeing this horrible Canyon, I have hardly fainted away. I have never wanted to drink water so much as now. Goodbye. Gertrude Stevens.»

The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided canyon, carved by the Colorado River in the United States in the state of Arizona. It is considered to be one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Today, the Canyon is one mile deep and 277 miles long (446km).

To raft along Colorado, you must overcome more than hundreds of thresholds on a canoe, kayaks or boats. A lot of sportsmen come from all over the World to the Grand Canyon. In the natural caves you can see the concerts of classical music- the acoustics here is excellent. «The Grand Canyon is, probably, the most significant page in the history of the Earth, written and left to descendants by the nature». Among red rocks you can see hundreds fantastic sceneries which are open every minute.

The Grand Canyon is one of America’s main tourist attractions, attracting about five million visitors a year. It is so big that you must go there yourself to feel its true size and beauty.

For thousands of years, the area has been continuously inhabited by Native Americans who built settlements within the Canyon and its many caves. The native inhabitants of this places Indians- Paiute called this natural wonder Kaibab, which means the mountain that has been put upside down.

The Grand Canyon is not the deepest Canyon in the world nor the widest; however, it is known for its visually overwhelming size and its intricate and colorful landscape.

Cosmonauts flying over the Great Canyon can distinguish it without any difficulties.

It’s interesting that there are different kinds of plants and animals on opposite sides of the Canyon.

The south side is dry and desert country. The north side has tall forests.

The Canyon looks different at different times of day, and in different seasons and weather.

At sunrise and sunset the red, gold, brown, and orange colors of the rocks are especially clear and bright.
